Ski Chalets - Chalet Ski Holidays

Chalet Guanaco, Meribel, France - a luxury catered ski chalet from Ski Jungle About Ski Chalets and Chalet Ski Holidays

Catered chalet holidays have become a mainstay of the British ski culture over the past forty years. A mixture of ski lodge, guest house and private home, they come in all shapes and sizes

Catered ski chalets vary in quality from five star luxury to budget one star skiing accommodation. For a privately run ski chalet, without travel costs included, expect to pay anything from £1000 per person down to around £300 per person per week.

Ski tour operators in the UK will include travel costs (ie: flights and ski transfers from the airport), and although a company chalet will be a little more impersonal than the privately run ones, a complete package ski deal is more preferable to many skiers.

Most ski chalets are private businesses, however, and are often owned by the people who run them. These are more likely than not families or couples who have moved to the mountains.

The facilities will be geared to what skiers want. An average set up will consist of 10 beds with all the bedrooms having ensuite bathrooms. Breakfast, tea and dinner will be included. The dinner will typically consist of pre-eat canapes, three courses and wine with the standard of food varying considerably.

Guests do not always have to fill ski chalets themselves. Some proprietors are happy to fill their chalets piecemeal; expect a discount if you take the whole chalet. Children under a certain age may also be discounted (not literally!), and if the owners have their own family, may be well geared up for children where other chalets are not.

'What you pay for is what you get' is the best maxim to have in the back of your mind when choosing a catered skiing holiday. The competition is quite fierce as there are plenty of ski chalets to go around!

St Jean d'Aulps, Morzine and the Portes du SoleilIf you are driving out it may not matter that the chalet is some way from the slopes. Choose a chalet to suit your own needs. If the chalet is not ski-in-ski-out, there may be a taxi service provided and possibly even an airport transfer included.

If the food is priority, check out what's on offer. The food and wine can be exceptional if one of the owners is a chef.

If you want to try out a new ski resort then you won't know your way around. Ski guiding and ski instruction may also be part of the package if there is someone qualified in the chalet.

The choices of catered skiing holidays are many and varied - what you can be sure of is that as long as there's snow and skiing, there will always be chalet holidays!
